Turning breath into insights
At Halitus, we’re passionate about building diagnostic technology that frees humanity from debilitating diseases. We aim to make diseases from COVID-19 to cancer detectable within less than a minute, conveniently and non-invasive. If you get excited about shaping a future of healthcare that is proactive, intuitive to use, sustainable, and cost-effective, we'd love for you to join us. We’re an award-winning, purpose-driven Berlin-based DeepTech Start-up led by engineers and a doctor, supported by Roche’s RoX and backed by renowned investors. Halitus is looking for a talented Gas System Engineer to develop a cutting edge, non-invasive breath analyser. Come join us to be involved in state-of-the-art technology and an exciting new medical device R&D project.
The role
We’re looking for a gas system engineer who leads the design, integration, and continuous improvement of the gas-dynamic solutions in the TDLAS medical diagnostic device. We strongly believe in engineering teams being responsible for the operations of their services in research, development, and production. In this role, you’ll work closely with fellow engineers and broader team members, including medical doctors, laser engineers and molecular physicists in a fast-paced environment.
Core responsibilities
Aside from the technical aspects of the design also has aspects related to costs, reliability, availability and serviceability. Your responsibility is to take ownership of the gas-dynamic scope of a project and drive the deliverables towards completion within the requirements of medical device-related industry standards. This includes documentation, specification, qualification, integration, and driving issue handling.
To fulfil this role, you need to align with the multi-disciplinary teams in the project on technical and functional aspects, scope, planning, and progress. Using your technical knowledge and analytical thinking, you take technical ownership of various deliverables that need to be developed for complex gas dynamics modules.
Typical tasks include:
Specifies, designs, and supports implementation, qualification, and integration of new gas sensors functionality in breath analysis
Executes within the gas dynamic measuring module's scope, architecture, and functional requirements based on the high-level system
Defines the scope, architecture, and functional requirements of the gas-dynamic measuring modules based on the high-level system and module requirements
Research and development in the field of unsteady gas mixtures
Acquisition of knowledge on the mechanisms related to measuring gas-dynamic parameters (flow rate, pressure, temperature, humidity)
Contributes in a team to the development of a TDLAS-based medical diagnostic device that requires a mixture of hardware and machine learning developments
Contributes to diagnosing, resolving, and preventing technical issues. This involves analysing data, connecting the results to physical phenomena, and steering toward the proper solution
Prepares research and development reports
Documents in compliance with ISO 13485 and related norms
Designs mathematical models of complex gas dynamics and physical processes
Performs and supervises tests experiments
Translates performance requirements into technical designs supported by multi-disciplinary specifications as input for detailed designs
Develops medical diagnostic equipment
Works with gas cylinders and gas mixtures
Designs, develops, and maintains the experimental setup
Instals, adjusts, and maintains pressure sensors and other precision gas dynamic sensors
Provides expertise in gas systems, computational air dynamics, and Modeling and Simulation (M&S) of aerodynamics and diagnostic systems
Reviews gas-dynamic sensors portfolio to evaluate and recommend alternative plans,
Improves systems engineering programs/processes, manage/sustain technical programme baseline, and design/perform system-level tests to assure that subsystems and system performance is achieved
Analyses and evaluates results of major engineering breath analysing systems
Selects appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to resolve complex engineering issues
Anticipates and resolves complex issues creatively and effectively, developing standards and guides for gas systems, including experimental setups
Works without appreciable direction; work is reviewed from a long-range perspective for desired results
Exercises latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments and makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative
Maintains a current knowledge of developments in the field of speciality and other related gas/aerodynamics fields to recommend innovations to improve the quality and effectiveness of our products.
Requirements, education, and skills
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related technical curriculum applicable to the respective job position required

Hands-on experience in gas systems
Experience working with arrays of sensors (pressure, humidity, temperature, etc.)
Thorough knowledge of Gas/Fluid Mechanics
Experience with computational gas dynamics analyses techniques
Application of techniques for post-processing and visualisation of complex gas flow solutions using scientific visualisation packages
Proficiency in one or more programming languages to generate tools and scripts supporting the work. Options include (but are not limited to): Python, Matlab, C/C++
Good communication skills, including preparation and presentation of briefings on technical results for different levels within the organisation
Experience in working self-driven and in a multi-disciplinary team
Preferred:
More than three years in medical gas dynamics projects (spirometry in priority)
Industry experience in applied gas/aerodynamics medical devices, performing analyses and experiments to resolve aerodynamic issues.
Experience with developing and running optimisation codes coupled with computational gas dynamics.
Managerial experience or training
Experience with spirometer development, signal processing and mathematical optimisation techniques
