Turning breath into insights
At Halitus, we’re passionate about building diagnostic technology that frees humanity from debilitating diseases. We aim to make diseases from COVID-19 to cancer detectable within less than a minute, conveniently and non-invasive. If you get excited about shaping a future of healthcare that is proactive, intuitive to use, sustainable, and cost-effective, we'd love for you to join us. We’re an award-winning, purpose-driven Berlin-based DeepTech Start-up led by engineers and a doctor, supported by Roche’s RoX and backed by renowned investors.
The role
We’re looking for a senior optics designer who leads the design, integration, and continuous improvement of the IR laser optic solutions in the TDLAS medical diagnostic device. We strongly believe in engineering teams being responsible for the operations of their services in research, development, and production. In this role, you’ll work closely with fellow engineers and broader team members, including medical doctors, in a fast-paced environment.
Core responsibilities
Aside from the technical aspects of the design also has aspects related to costs, reliability, availability and serviceability. Your responsibility is to take ownership of the technical scope of a project and drive the deliverables towards completion within the requirements of medical device-related industry standards. This includes documentation, specification, qualification, integration, and driving issue handling.
To fulfil this role, you need to align with the multi-disciplinary teams in the project on technical and functional aspects, scope, planning, and progress. Using your technical knowledge and analytical thinking, you take technical ownership of various deliverables that need to be developed for complex TDLAS modules. If required, you will lead a multi-disciplinary project team on technical aspects as well.
Typical tasks include:
Specification, design, support implementation, qualification, and integration of new TDLAS functionality in breath analysis
Execution within the optical module's scope, architecture, and functional requirements based on the high-level system
Definition of the scope, architecture, and functional requirements of the optical modules based on the high-level system and module requirements
Research and development in the field of TDLAS
Acquisition of knowledge on the mechanisms related to optical cells heating and linking to the optical and imaging performance of the entire system
Contribution, in a team, to the development of a TDLAS-based medical diagnostic device that requires a mixture of hardware and machine learning developments
Contribution to diagnosing, resolving, and preventing technical issues. This involves analysing data, connecting the results to physical phenomena such as TDLAS and steering towards the proper solution directions.
Management of medical diagnostic equipment development processes
Constant engagement with all engineering staff, monitoring KPIs
Preparation of research and development reports
Documentation in compliance with ISO 13485 and related norms
Mathematical modelling of complex optical systems and physical processes
Development of noise reduction algorithms and modes of operation for laser spectroscopes
Performance and supervision of experiments
Building relationships and working closely with our main development partners and suppliers
Technical leadership for the deliverables in the product development, definition of the functional architecture, and direction setting for the various solutions in the TDLAS modules
Translation of performance requirements into technical designs supported by multi-disciplinary specifications as input for detailed designs.
Requirements, education, and skills
Minimum:
Bachelor's degree with at least five years of experience in Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Laser Engineering, or similar discipline
MSc or PhD in engineering or physics with knowledge of optical/laser systems.
Knowledge of basic CAD (minimum of Autocad and Solidworks)
More than five years of experience in optical electronics or medical optic systems
Ability to calculate and simulate a variety of optical effects and phenomena
Deep understanding of and experience in optical-mechanical design TDLAS technology
Hands-on experience in at least one of the following fields: IR lasers, DFB QCL, linear/nonlinear optics, optical sensors, optical design (ZEMAX, VirtualLab Fusion)
Experience in developing complex optical modules in a multi-disciplinary environment is needed.
Preferred:
Managerial experience or training
Experience in working self-driven and in a multi-disciplinary team
Experience with TDLAS in breath analysis, optics lifetime, signal processing and mathematical optimisation techniques
